Why is the charge rate lower than advertised? Can I speed it up?

Does your charge point give a higher rate of charge than the one your currently experiencing? There could be a few reasons for that

Are you driving a Hybrid or PHEV?

Most charge points on the Clenergy EV Network will charge at a rate of 22kW, and this is classified as a fast charge. However, only fully electrical vehicles will charge at this rate. PHEVs will never charge at 22kW, usually maxing out at 3.7kW.

This is due to the battery cell in hybrid vehicles being relatively small. If it took in a charge at a speed any higher, it would overheat the battery and likely render it unusable long term.

Some hybrid vehicles can achieve is 6.4 kW on a 2/3 Phase charger.

Are you driving a fully electric vehicle and still not hitting the top charger limits?

A fully electric vehicle has a larger battery than PHEVs, so can take a full charge easily, without harming battery life. However this charge rate can still be dependent on a few different factors, as detailed below:

  • Cold whether will slow the charge and stop the vehicle from charging to full potential.

  • If the station is a double socket with another vehicle charging, the charger will split the charge evenly. For example a 22 kw charger will provide both vehicles with 11 kWh.

  • Your vehicle or cable could be restricted to only receiving certain speeds. for example you could be using a 22 kW charger but only be limited to 7 kW.

Are you using a Direct Charge (DC) socket?

Direct Charging refers to the electricity supply directly charging the battery. It doesn't need converting or "alternating", like on an Alternate Charge (AC).
